College student socializing A new school year is here! Life is about to get busier, which means your dental health may not be a big priority as you juggle classes and studying time. Don’t let the school year lead to bad news the next time you see your dentist. Here are a few back-to-school tips to ensure you ace your semi-annual dental exam.

Commit to Brushing and Flossing

Brushing and flossing are essential for healthy teeth and gums. However, life gets pretty busy during the school year. If you skip brushing before bed or forget to floss, you can have an increased risk of cavities and gum disease.

Brush your teeth twice a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Floss your teeth every night to remove any buildup your toothbrush couldn’t reach. If you tend to rush out the door before brushing in the morning, create a travel-sized oral hygiene kit to take with you.

Cut Back on Sugars and Starches

If you’re relying on coffee, energy drinks, or soda to give you the burst of energy you need to make it through the school day, you’re bathing your teeth in cavity-causing bacteria. If you find yourself munching on chips or cookies between classes or studying, you’re at risk of tooth decay. It’s best to limit your consumption of sugars and starches to safeguard your enamel from cavities-causing residue. Instead, choose fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products.

Stop Bad Dental Habits

If you chew on your fingernails or pencils when studying or working out a math problem, you can damage your teeth over time. Don’t chew on inedible objects. Instead, chew sugarless gum to protect your teeth. It also stimulates saliva production to keep your mouth clean between brushing and flossing.

Drink More Water

Relying on caffeine to stay awake can increase dehydration, which is bad news for your mouth and body. Stay hydrated by drinking at least eight 8-oz glasses of water every day. Not only will you keep your mouth moist, but you’ll also cleanse your teeth with every sip you take.

Visit Your Dentist Regularly

Don’t forget to visit your dentist every 6 months for a cleaning and checkup. They’ll help keep your mouth clean and healthy to reduce the likelihood of a dental emergency interrupting your learning experience. Regular dental appointments will prevent common oral health issues, so you can spend more time focusing on your academics.

Keep your dental health a priority during the school year. You’ll avoid hearing bad news during your next cleaning and checkup.
